Like having my PA around 24-7.

Do you forget things? Important things, like say your meds? Me too, it's why I have an echo dot. It is small but mighty, with a start my day function, which will tell me things I have to do today, including appointments, let me know the weather temp ( important as I can't feel hot or cold ) and start the radio for me. I can also add to my calendar by saying " Alexa " and set reminders for my medication, or having a drink, or eating.
I live in a decent size two bedroom house and it can pick me up anywhere in the house, much further then siri or google can. I can also pair it to my phone so I can get it to call for help if I have a fall.
It's also smart home capable, able to link into my Amazon fire stick to change channels ( a blessing when I've dropped the remote and can't bend down), search for shows or play games. If you have smart lights and devices it can even turn lights on and off and control your house temp via voice command.
It's also easy to set up, whole thing took me about 6 mins.

Living room

Amazon

£15 - £50

I'd recommend this for anyone with mobility, memory issues, or if blind.

As long as you have internet in your home it works.

Amazon frequently have this on promotion, and at less then a decent blue tooth speaker.

Great gadget - much better than expected

4.7 out of 5 stars

OK I am not normally a gadget fan but really could not be without this! Use it every day for telling me the weather, alarm clock and listening to music. Occasionally use it for other things such as converting ounces to grams, timer, playing meditations, reading books, jokes etc
Best if you have Amazon prime as we have had free access to variety of music (but I believe that it is changing in the new year and music will cost extra!)

Bedroom

Amazon

£15 - £50

I remember having problems setting it up and it was really annoying.

Once its set up we have had no problems. Apart from if you mention its name in conversation it starts working - which is a bit spooky!

They are so cheap now !

New Amazon Echo Dot, Same functionality, much improved sound.

5 out of 5 stars

The Amazon Echo Dot is Amazon's entry level smart speaker. Smart speakers are speakers that connect wirelessly to the Internet or to your phone or other device. They have access to an online assistant which can do many things including finding out the time, setting alarms and timers, playing radio stations, playing music and controlling smart home devices such as plugs with timers, lights, thermostats and TVs.

The Amazon Echo Dot third generation is Amazon's latest entry level smart speaker. It costs £50 full price, though it is often available for much less than this from Amazon and most highstreet retailers. Functionally, it is the same as the Echo Second generation. It uses Amazon's Alexa voice assistant, but it has much better audio than the Echo Dot second generation. it is slightly bigger and heavier and it's speaker is bigger but apart from this it is just the same to use.

The Echo Dot third generation has no screen so it is ideal for a blind person to use and it can e used for many tasks once it is sset up, even if the user doesn't always have access to a mobile phone. Even though I use lots of technology, using your voice to find out the time or set alarms or play a particular radio station is so quick and straight forward that I find myself using Echo Dot all the time. if you want better audio, you can connect it to speakers with the auxiliary 3.5 mm jack socket or use bluetooth to connect to other speakers.

If you already have an Echo Dot second generation, this improvement would give better sound but it may make more sense to buy a separate bluetooth or wired speaker instead. If you want an extra device for listening in the background while working in a small office for example, the Echo Dot could be ideal for this purpose.

Amazon Echo Dot Third Generation

At home

Amazon

£15 - £50

the Echo dot has no screen so it is totally voice controlled. This makes it ideal for blind people such as myself.

It is new so arguably too soon to tell, but I have had no failure of other amazon Echo products.

This is great value even at £50 but at half the price, which I paid for it this is amazing value.
